Spain makes its debut as host

After an extended break owing to Covid-19, the HSBC World Sevens Series returned with renewed purpose towards the end of 2021, with a double-header in Dubai. That momentum was carried over into the new year, as the series headed to a debut destination – arriving in Spain for the first time in its history.

On the pitch, the Blitzboks defeated Argentina in the men’s final in Malaga, before following that up with another win in Seville. The 33-7 win in the second final, over Australia, extended their perfect start to the 2022 Series and now means they have racked up six straight cup victories. It was South Africa’s 34th consecutive match win – the second-longest streak of all time, set by New Zealand’s 2001-02 team.

On the women’s side, the USA claimed victory in Malaga, whilst Australia’s women won in Seville, which means they have now won three of the four tournaments so far this season. They had to be at their best to come from behind and beat an in-form Ireland side competing in their first ever Cup final.

Our very own HSBC World Rugby Sevens team were on hand in both Malaga and Seville to help partners activate at each tournament. On behalf of World Rugby, we delivered two excellent events comprising of branding, hospitality, content strands and activations for a range of clients.

World Rugby recorded its updated content strands in both Malaga and Seville, most notably Ronald Brown’s Remarkable story of survival from cancer and then coming back to play Sevens.

Capgemini’s Momentum Tracker content focused on Aussie Magic, with Australian Men’s captain Henry Hutchinson scoring two tries in the first six minutes of their match against Kenya!

Captain’s Photo at Plaza Espana

Tasked with reinvigorating the renowned Captain’s Photo, we challenged the hosts to deliver a truly unique experience in Seville for the team captains. The result was a horse and carriage ride through the stunning streets of Seville, followed by a Game of Thrones Quiz Show in front of Plaza Espana.

HSBC Ball Carriers and Player of the Final

The HSBC Ball Carriers made a return in Malaga, where they not only got to run onto the pitch with the ball, but they were also interviewed in front of the entire Malaga crowd by Jamie Nava of Money Heist.

We also saw the HSBC player of the finals crowned at both tournaments by Sevens superstar, Dan Norton. In Malaga, South Africa’s Selvyn David took home the men’s award and USA’s Ilona Maher the women’s. In Seville, Christie Grobelaar – also of South Africa – claimed the men’s accolade, whilst the Aussie Dominque Du Toit won the women’s prize.

Roll on April, where the series will resume, first in Singapore and then on to Vancouver and Langford.
